Today is Virginia's 27th year with the U.S. Postal Service.

She worked last night 11:00 pm to 8:00 am.

Virginia has been battling a slow-healing diabetic ulcer on the bottom of her right foot. At some point she developed a Charot deformity (not to be confused with Charot-Marie-Tooth) which has complicated healing. Her arch has been quite flattened. Today she had surgery to remodel her foot and close the wound.

I drove her to the Adventist Medical Center in Portland, Oregon for her 9 o'clock "am admit".

She started out on the third floor "short stay" unit for the preliminary vitals signs, blood work and ECG. Her ride to the second floor for surgery came earlier than expected but she was ready.

She was in the surgery suite twenty minutes ahead of her scheduled 1:00 pm start time. Her podiatrist (Dr. David Greenberg) blocked out two ours for her foot surgery. He was assisted by a another physician (a specialist) who rotated some of the skin on the sole of her foot to help close the wound. A third physician observed.

Prior to surgery, one of the nurses called Kathleen Severance, RN over and they had prayer before the surgery. We know Kathleen from the Mt. Tabor SDA church in Portland.

Before the surgery Dr. Greenberg told us he planned to excise (remove) part of the talus bone to take the pressure off her wound area. He also said he would lengthen her Achilles tendon to facilitate her right foot range of motion.

Some what after 3:00 pm, two hours after they started, Dr Greenberg reported to me that surgery went well and there were no surprises.

Virginia remembers first seeing the clock in recovery at twenty minutes before four pm. I received the word she was back in her new room at 4:10 pm.

She is currently in room 2314. She can be reached by telephone at 503-257-2500. Ask for Virginia Tuttle in room 2314. Cards can be sent to our home address.

I suspect they may consider getting her a different room. She could use a bed that works better. It's one of the older Hill-Rom models.

She was able to call her mom post-surgery. We took Bonnie out for lunch last week as Virginia will be laid up on Mother's day.
